About

Curriculum Vitae

Jörg Baier was born in Darmstadt, grew up in Upper Bavaria and began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He completed his studies as a master student with Erwin Gross at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. In Karlsruhe he set up his first studio, began exhibiting, was an active participant in a regional scene. He organises exhibitions, readings and performances mainly in temporary, self-organised situations. He is currently active in the loose, international group „Karoshi“.
In Karlsruhe he met his wife, the French-born painter Corinne Chotycki: travels, exhibitions and friendships to and in France followed — a new point of reference, a new language that opened up other perspectives. After a scholarship at the Cité des Arts in Paris, he moved to Brussels, where he lives and works today.

Jörg Baier realises his pictorial ideas as mixed media on paper. Aqueous and oily techniques are mixed to create images of luminous colourfulness or dirty materiality. The motifs are simple: walls, palisades, palm trees, suns, volcanoes, waves and so on. They oscillate between false naivety and comic-like imagined representation.
In addition, collages are created that are realised as photograms, scans or photographs and are usually printed as inkjet prints on photographic paper. They are representations of a private archaeology — images of works from art history, found objects, painted and cut-out cardboard are woven into a fictional narrative.
Jörg Baier has developed the artist’s book into an independent discipline in his oeuvre. They are objects (variations on the form and function of the leporello) which integrate the images into an interactive system. The coloured papers and bookbinding cloth used are reminiscent of the aesthetics of board games.
With the painter Corinne Chotycki, Jörg Baier creates installations that are often developed in direct relation to architectural situations and the specifics of the exhibition. The materials are mostly coloured, sewn fabrics. In addition, the two artists also conceive editions.

Jörg Baier’s works have been shown in exhibitions in renowned institutions (Kunsthalle Recklinghausen, Kunsthalle Basel, Bielefelder and Heidelberger Kunstverein, Siegener and Ulmer Museum, among others). His works have been awarded prestigious prizes (graduate scholarship, scholarship at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, Columbus Art Foundation Prize and Ronse Drawing Price). Jörg Baier’s works are in international collections.
