The last station of the international exhibition „Art On The Stream“ will take place at the Academia Gallery of the National Academy of Arts of Bulgaria in Sofia from 12 October to 29 October 2022. Previous stops were in Novi Sad (SRB) and Timisoara (ROU) in summer 2022, where the exhibition was shown as part of Cultural Capital of Europe. Further stops of the show were in Zagreb (HR) and in Pécsi (HUN) in spring 2022. In autumn 2021, the exhibition was shown in Košice (Kasárne Cultural Park, Galéria Alfa). The show was launched in the summer 2020 at Schallaburg (AT) and Museum Ulm (DE).
„Art On The Stream“ brings together artists and curators from the Danube region and is created in the spirit of closer cooperation between the Danube countries. In addition, artists and curators met repeatedly in the context of symposia and especially in the context of the two European Capitals of Culture Novi Sad 2022 and Timisoara 2022 to exchange ideas and build networks. The project will be accompanied by an elaborate catalogue (German-English), which will also include contemporary literary quotations.

Karōshi (japanisch, 過労死, Tod durch Überarbeiten)
Zum vierten Mal treffen sich die acht KünstlerInnen aus Berlin, Hamburg, Helsinki und Brüssel in einer Ausstellung. Gemeinsam ist ihnen die Auseinandersetzung mit Malerei und Zeichnung. Das Ausloten der Möglichkeiten dieser Medien reicht von der zweidimensionalen Bildfläche über das dreidimensionale Objekt bis zum Ausweiten der Malerei in den Raum. Unterschiedlichste Materialien und Vorgehensweisen treffen im Museum Pachen aufeinander und gehen überraschende Konstellationen ein. Fragile Welten aus geschnittenem Papier stoßen auf merkwürdige Gestalten auf der Leinwand, dreidimensionale Farborgien und großformatige Zeichnungen laden zum Eintauchen ein. Dass die Flut der alltäglichen Anforderungen bisweilen zum spontanen Ableben führt, ist in Japan schon lange bekannt. In der japanischen Sprache hat sich der Ausdruck „Karoshi“ entwickelt für das, was in der westlichen Welt als Überarbeitung oder Burnout klassifiziert wird. In einer Gegenwart, in der Zeit als knappes Gut gehandelt wird und viele Entscheidungen von wirtschaftlichen Erwägungen geleitet werden, stellen sich die KünstlerInnen der Ausstellung in ihren Werkprozessen lustvoll gegen dieses Diktat der Geschwindigkeit. Ihre Arbeitsweise erfordert es, sich in unökonomischer Weise mit Bedacht und Langsamkeit dem Schaffensprozess unterzuordnen. Der dialogische Prozess, in dem das Kunstwerk entsteht, entwickelt eine Eigendynamik, zu deren Kennzeichen eine Unberechenbarkeit zählt, die das genaue Gegenteil eines effizient gesteuerten Arbeitsprozesses darstellt.

„Art On The Stream“ will be part of the Novi Sad 2022 – European Capital of Culture programme. The show is on view at the Rajko Mamuzic Gallery up to the 11th of August 2022.
Novi Sad is the 7th station of this unique artistic journey along the Danube.
After this stop in Timisoara (Romania), the exhibition will be shown in Novi Sad (Serbia). The last stop of the traveling exhibition will be in the National Academy of Art in Sofia (Bulgaria) in the fall of 2022.

Short video on behalf of the „Art On The Stream“ touring exhibition about my way from my home in the European Quarter to my studio in Brussels-Molenbeek.
The international exhibition „Art on the Stream“ moves to its next station, the city of Košice, in the Eastern part of Slovakia. The art works of more than 20 artists from 8 Danube countries will be exhibited in the Galéria Alfa at Kasárne Kulturpark from 21 October to 3 November 2021.

Ziel des Projekts ist die Präsentation von verschiedenen Kunstpositionen, Künstler*innen und Kurator*innen aus den Donauländern, die in einer Wanderausstellung in den Jahren 2020-2022 gezeigt werden. Darüber hinaus werden sich Künstler*innen und Kurator*innen im Rahmen von Symposien und insbesondere im Rahmen der beiden europäischen Kulturhauptstädte Novi Sad 2021 und Temeswar 2021 wiederholt begegnen, sich austauschen und Netzwerke bilden. Das Projekt wird von einem aufwändigen Katalog begleitet (deutsch-englisch), der als neue Komponente auch zeitgenössische literarische Zitate zu den ausgewählten Kunstwerken beinhalten wird.

The draft was developed for the garden courtyard of an office building in the European Quarter in Brussels. The courtyard consists of three glass facades and a brick wall. A relief painted sulphur yellow was designed for this wall (size 4 x 5 metres, four parts). This work was to be realised by the renowned Aachen blacksmith Michael Hammers.

Double-sided sewn pictures, flags or wall hangings made of overlapping, loosely falling cotton fabrics. The flags seem to refer to signal flags of seafaring — like an alphabet that throws signs into the room by turning and varying the order.

Depuis l’année 2011, quand les bijoutiers Van Kueken sont partis du 63 rue du Houblon, il n’y a plus rien – plus d’or, plus de pierres – dans le gros coffre fort qui est posé au milieu de la petite salle dans l’entresol. On dit qu’ils y ont laissé la moquette et des étagères et dieu sait quoi encore. De toute manière la porte est verrouillée et même les deux ouvertures qui servaient jadis à respirer en cas d’enfermement accidentel, sont obstruées. Alors l’idée d’y pénétrer peut nous traverser l’esprit – parce qu’un coffre fort qui peut vous contenir tout entier et même à plusieurs, c’est tout de même quelque chose ! Mais que cela soit dit – comme émanant d’une autorité supérieure qui se matérialise en creux par la perte d’un code et la disparition d’une clef : Personne n’y entrera plus jamais ! Alors en regardant le gros cube mutique, si l’on se met à y réfléchir, la moquette, les étagères et dieu sait quoi encore, à l’intérieur, peuvent devenir des pensées un peu entêtantes. Comme des choses éternelles ou comme des pierres sacrées. « Est-ce que la poussière se dépose ou pas sur des étagères bouclées à tout jamais dans un coffre fort ? »
Le coffre a également ceci de particulier – pour un coffre de ce volume – qu’il n’est pas encastré dans un mur. On peut – faute d’y pénétrer – en faire le tour, pour tenter de le cerner. La petite salle de l’entresol dont il occupe le centre, devient alors (au début du printemps) la piste d’un rite circum ambulatoire collectif pendant lequel, la foule (qu’elle peut contenir), tourne et fait tourner autour du monolithe opaque, toutes les questions obsédantes relatives à la moquette, les étagères et dieu sait quoi encore.

Haus der Lüge oder 91, Avenue Sleeckx
Das Haus in der Avenue Sleeckx ist nicht weit von uns entfernt. Um dort hin zu gehen überquert man den Ring und die Strassenbahnschienen. Hält man sich links, ist es die zweite Strasse rechts. Am Schlüsseldienst und der Reinigung vorbei ist das Haus schon zu sehen. Es steht heute leer. Damals, als wir die Wohnung im dritten Stock beziehen wollten, mussten schon einige der Mieter fortgezogen sein, die anderen zogen nach und nach aus, das bemerkte ich aber erst später.
Der Vermieter hatte uns vorgeschlagen die Bilder mit selbstklebenden Haken aufzuhängen, man müsse so keine Löcher in die Wand bohren und ausserdem wären diese Haken billig zu bekommen. War das geeignet für unser Vorhaben? War die Wohnung nicht zu klein? Wo aber sonst hätten wir hin sollen?
Das alles ist eine Frage der Dekoration, denke ich heute. Bilder, Zeichnungen, Tapeten lassen sich ja ohne Probleme anbringen. Für die Skulptur gab es keinen Kaminsims, erstaunlich für einen Altbau. Wir überlegten mit Vorhängen das größere Zimmer zu teilen – klein wäre es schon, dass mussten wir uns damals wohl eingestanden haben. Dafür ist das Treppenhaus weiträumig, versicherten wir uns gegenseitig, mit einem farbig gefassten Oberlicht versehen, orange-gelbe dreieckige Formen um ein Zentrum geordnet: das Treppenhaus mit seinem Lichtspiel wäre doch ein schöner Kontrast zur kleinen Wohnung.
Wir stellen sie voll mit Leinwänden, deren Bilder von Vasen und Landschaften mit dem Gesicht zur Wand lehnen. Papierrollen, Materialreste, Töpferwaren stapeln sich in der nähe des Fensters das zum Innenhof hinaus geht, davor eine Lampe aus Draht. Im kleineren Zimmer sind Kleidungsstücke auf Äste gelegt, darunter schlafen wir. Manchmal sitzen wir auf den beiden Stühlen und betrachten die Wände, Farbe blättert ab, Landschaften werden sichtbar.
